Rainy Day Activities for Energetic Kids

Rainy day activities for those very energetic tots and tods.

With Spring in full swing and Summer just around the corner, the weather here in the UK and beyond can be just that little bit more drizzly and that little bit rainier. With that in mind, what do you do when you’re in need of something to keep very energetic and sometimes downright crazy little tot and tods entertained and enthused without destroying your home in the process? Here’s our NB approved rainy day activities we’re loving right now, and that actually comes in handy!

Rainy day activities for keeping your house clean…

Why not have a day playing “boarding schools” or “Summer Camp”? This involves you being the “headmaster” or just generally in charge, the role can also be swapped around to vary the game up a little. Use this to your advantage and set tasks for the kids like sorting out your toys, dress to impress, brush hair and teeth, make your beds and generally get some chores done! All under the guise of role playing of course…

Rainy day activities for feeding the little ones…

Get a decent lunch in the kids and even make some prep for dinner time with a bout of cooking with a twist. We’re talking fun things like baking small, simple fairy cakes topped with yoghurt and fruit.

Try making your own “pizza party” by topping half a toasted pita or flatbread with tomato sauce, cheese, ham or chicken and salad bits, make smiley faces and artwork with the toppings and bake for around 5 minutes in the oven so the cheese melts! A perfect game for prepping dinner too as they can make extras.

Another great dinner prep in disguise idea is the “salad shaker music” or “salad band” simply grab a few Tupper Wear boxes, some salad leaves, grated or ribboned carrot, chopped nuts (depending on allergies), grapes or olives, chopped tomato or pepper and even a bit of cous cous or rice. Get the kids to fill their vessels with ingredients and maybe add some dressing, and then it’s shake shake shake to some music. Fill up a few boxes and pots and there you have salad portions for the next few days, done.

Rainy day activities for burning energy…

Get some energy out of the kids and hopefully (fingers crossed) avoid “crazy hour” in the evening with a few indoor party games. Try musical chairs by playing some music for the kids to dance to for three or four minutes and stop the music, they have to sit down as fast a possible to avoid being “out”. Simple enough, and you can make your own rules too, try standing like statues when the music stops, sitting or lying on the floor, standing on one leg or even hiding… the more variations, the longer the game will last and the more energy burned!

Rainy day activities for educating little ones…

After all the books and stories are read, the little ones need something a bit more interactive. Try doing some simple activities which get them thinking such as arranging toys and objects by colour and see how many colours they have learned. Try arranging things by number, then putting things away by number.

Find certain objects by description e.g. “find a red cup with a blue handle” try being cryptic and see how they think through the task and react to different requests. Add an extra dimension by getting them to log this on a piece of paper, tracking their finds like explorers.

The secret stash you need for rainy day activities:

  • Any spare cardboard or cardboard boxes
  • Old patterned wrapping paper, string or ribbon or grab an activity pack for emergencies.
  • Drawing implements, art supplies and anything creative.
  • Chocolate (for your own well being) add this to your stash.
